Travel between and around Malta and Gozo, being fairly small islands, has always been done by boat. In modern times, depending on your needs and where you are going, you can use anything from a cruise ship, to a million dollar plus yacht, to ferries of many capacities, to sailboats, fishing boats, skiffs, or dinghies. Malta is a major cruise destination mainly for Europeans and travelers from the UK. I chose to go there in April before the cruise season really kicked in, and in spite of that, the main town of Valletta was fairly crowded. Several cruise ships were docked in the main harbor every day.
There were lots of Italian tourists, and if one takes the ferry from Sicily to Malta, the distance is only 60 miles and takes a little less than 2 hours. This is what we saw in the harbor of the capital city of Valletta.
