Here I am, back from a 6 day junket around southern Utah, focusing on archaeology, geology and rock art. This trip was put together by Darrell and his wife Paula for friends and relatives of theirs. Darrell and Paula were leaders of 3 of my previous Road Scholar trips, and they also live near me in Cedar City. We had 11 people in a 12 passenger van, and one extra for one of the days. It was tight and by the end of the trip, getting in and out multiple times each day was starting to wear on us physically. Our route took us north of I 70 to 9 Mile Canyon, and then back down south of the highway to the Henry Mountains and the northern end of Lake Powell. We finished up going west from Escalante past Bryce National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument and home to Cedar City. Of course, there were a lot of stops and fabulous views along the way, too. I had visited some of these areas previously, but not all of them.
I will be mainly sharing photos of some of the locations we visited, along with some information. The highlight of our first day out was a hike to the Rochester Rock Art Panel near Emery Utah. To get there, one drives 4 miles down a dirt road after getting off of the highway. The hike is about ½ mile one way. It was moderately challenging for our group, as the trail was narrow with occasional steep drop offs on one side in addition to some scrambling over rocks.
The rock art panel is the premier panel in the San Rafael Swell and well worth the effort to go there.
