I chose to route my trip over to Page, Arizona, through Monument Valley, Utah. It is a little bit longer and very much more picturesque than taking a more southerly route past the Four Corners Monument where you can stand in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico all at the same time!
The image above is quite notorious and has shown up in publications, TV and various films over the years. It is the eastern approach to the valley. To get this shot one needs to stand in the middle of the road, being mindful of oncoming traffic. As you can see, there were not a lot of cars on the road that day. Whew!!!
If you look carefully, you can see orange signs and cones along the road on both sides. The road was being paved and painted. There is just one ideal place to pull off the road to get this shot, and the road crew had just created a very much widened shoulder to accommodate several cars safely.
On my way back home, I took the same route through Monument Valley, pulling over at the newly paved parking area. Four or five cars pulled over right behind me, and we all dashed onto the road to get our shots. What fun!
